I know muscle weighs more then fat...but is it even possible to gain 12 pounds of muscle in one month? I definitely could be a body builder if I wanted, meaning I have the physique (thick full muscles) and I can build them fast. BUT I am trying to get more toned and not bulk up. So I've been lifting about every other day, lighter weight at about 20 reps and only one set (its what the gym dude said Nautilus was suppose to be) My clothing has fit the same, not looser or tighter but I've gained 12 pounds on the scale...just wondering what others thought of that. I asked the Gym "trainer" and he thought it was impossible but he also told me not to do any more then one set of 12 reps because I'm just "wasting" my time doing more then 12 reps because the body doesn't respond after 12 reps, which I don't agree with, maybe I'm wrong...so if anyone has any ideas on any of this please reply.

Ignore what you hear about the whole reps theories. Reps play into the whole scheme of things to a total volume and amount of weight moved in a given period of time. Heavy weights are generally what people want to do, but, there are other ways to grow too. 20 reps? Well, I don't recommend doing 20 reps, of course, unless you are doing 20 rep squats, but this isn't the case.

Many workouts I hit 15 reps for laterals though and I feel that it is intense enough to make my muscles grow. When I first started doing the 15 rep laterals, I was only able to get 6 reps out of 40lbs. After doing them on and off for a few months, I am now doing 40lbs laterals for 10 solid reps. If his theory was accurate, that should have never happened.

As for the 12lbs in a month. Def not muscle if you are natural. Like SG said, it's most likey a combo of water weight, fat and muscle combined.

Thanks for the replies. If I were to drop from 20 reps to 15 reps and only do 1 set do you think I'd see results? Or is 3 sets a definite must? Remember, I'm not wanting to bulk up I'm wanting to tone.

Getting tone is all about low body fat. This comes from diet and cardio, not really weight training. Weight training simply gives you denser/larger muscle so they are...easier to see. You will actually get that look you want faster by trying to get big. Getting big isn't easy. BTW, not sure if you are male or female. LOL If you are female, lemme tell you this. You will NEVER get big without lots of drugs. You don't have the hormones to support alot of msucle like men. Only drugs can get you there. So, train like you want to get big all you want, you won't get there.

Ya, I actually AM female! I think you're right, try to lose what body fat I have THEN try to build, if that's what I want...I really am naturally muscular, I have bigger legs (not all fat either!) then most men, I of course hate it, while everyone else says "wish I had those legs"....so we'll see. thanks for the help.
