Well, today was a sad day for a 15 year old girl and her mother. She lost her daddy from cardiac arrest today.

It all started with the father, who is 47 years old and a bit over weight, decided today was the day to start getting into shape. With a combination of the heat and a history of cholesterol which could have potentially caused some other unknown problems, he was unable to complete his first run, and completed his life. After just 6 minutes of running, he collapsed, began to have shallow breathing, then went into cardiac arrest. We arrived and administered two shocks and started a line and pushed all of the meds we could give without any luck. When we got to the hospital, the mother had gotten out of the ambulance and the asked me if he was alive. I told her that we were doing everything we could. I just could not tell her the truth at this point. It was not the right time and it was for a doctor to tell them, not me. As we approached the door, the 15 year old daughter came running up to the mother and her first words were "Is daddy dead?" I almost lost it when she said it because she barely got it out without choking on her tears.

Please, anyone who is over weight and wishes to start exercising, get a physical and start off light. There is no need to rush things.

I have always been good about death, I have never had a problem dealing with it. When the families get involved and I have to deal with them, I know I say all of the right things, but it's much harder.
