I am looking for a dog. I found one at the humane society, but a friend of mine, purely by coincidence, picked it up right before I got there. I really want a american bulldog/boxer mix. Im not looking to show the dog, hence why i don't care that that breed is not akc. i just want an energetic dog that will be loyal, crave exercise, and be playful. Anyone have any info on these types of dogs, or know where I can locate a good breeder?

I have two staffordshires the big blue is an American Stafforshire and my little baby girl is a Stafforshire Bull terrier or a 'staffy"..Love my big boy but the "staffy" is such a great dog not to big she is actually much bigger tne she should be at 37lbs because of the big boy and her playing so rough..She should only be about 30lbs..The male 'Gambit" is 80lbs the little one is 'Trinity"..

There are resuces you can find online and you really can;t go wrong with a staffy bull they are amazing with kids they arec alled "nanny dogs" over in englund where they were first introduced..They are the originbal little fight dogs so they do get labled as pitts..Nothing wrong with a good pitt either but making sure it is a true pittbull is the key not a crazy mix or dirt dog from a fckd up line or breeder..

storm. the american staff looks F***ING mean. one of my best frineds has a staffy and its mental. loves play fighting. draws blood every time i go round but i dont care. i could play with it all day. so strong.

Youhave to be a strong perosn to have one of these dogs..If you don;t know how to control them yes they can be destructive because they are so strong they can chew thorugh freakin metal..If you don;t become the alpha and have their total respect then you canhave problems..My male will sit right next to me off leash and not move if another dog passes he might whine a bit but he knows not to move..You must have that kind of control.

Thye are just like any breed you let them learn and do what they can bad habit is just that a bad habirt it may be cute as a pupply but once they are adults that shit can hurt. Being able to forsee that in the future and know the right way to raise and train them is a must.Breed is far from mean unless you another dog..Big babys lick you to death.

how do insurance company's view staff's vs pitts? they do look similar and im not looking to be uninsurable or pay rediculous rates. im also don't want a dog that my neighbors will freak out about without reason and end up having to muzzle the dog outside. Your dogs look great! the muscular frame is what i liked about the boxer/am bulldog mixes ive seen. head like a boxer, yet very strong chest. most ive seen have gotten to be about 80lbs as adults. though some smaller and some larger...

Most insurance co. don't know how close a staff is to a pit bull. problem is if you can't prove it's a staff and it eats the neighbors dog or something your ins. may think it's a pit and think you lied to them.

I love pit bulls, I've owned several over the years including grand champion fighting bred dogs (I never fought mine). They have kickass personalities and athletic ability, but Storm's right they're not for everybody. Too many well meaning but unprepared owners let them outta control and give the whole breed a bad name.

American bulldogs are cool and huge, but honestly on average more people aggressive than pits. My pit bulls never even tried to bite anyone but would chew through a chain link fence to kill pretty much any animal that came near.

posted by brsett
I don't get the point of having an aggressive dog. What if a baby pulls its tail? Or it kills the neighbor's dogs?

I'd stick with something more laid back. Boxers are generally friendly I think. Labs are very easy going. I've never seen an aggressive bulldog, though they have all had respiritory problems due to their pushed in face.

If I had neighbors who owned a Chow or pit bull, if it ever got out, I wouldn't call them to put it up. I'd just shoot it.

posted by Dex
Im with ya on that one. i've had 2 family dogs for 13-14 years so im going to stick with labs, shepards, etc...

Spoken like someone who knows nothing about pit bulls. I've been bitten three times in my life, by a chihuaha, a poodle, and a cocker spaniel. Never by a pit bull and my mom has pictures of me 3 years old riding our hog-hunting pit bull like a horse. Pits are very aggressive to other dogs but not people as a rule. I've had my dogs get into it with each other and I could jump right in and split them up with no fear of being bitten.

Yes, some pits will bite you and should be put down just like any breed. There are crazy specimens in every breed of dog and should not be tolerated. But to think the whole breed is bad or to be feared is just ignorant.
There are rednecks and idiots who think it's cool to try to make their dogs mean, but that's just stupid people not the dog's fault.

I agree I think boxers are generally pretty friendly. Thats why i was considering a boxer, plus my gf, who will also care for the dog, likes the look of boxers. As for bulldogs having health issues, its mainly with english bulldogs. My girl works as a vet tech so she has a pretty good idea what dogs have common problems. I love the muscular look of storms dogs as well as pitts but i like the personality of boxers. I'm going to see if I can find a good breeder or maybe a rescue dog that am bulldog mixed with boxer.

I agree, I've been growled at and barked at by a pit bull (that was chained to a truck in a parking lot), but never had any other dealings with one. I've been bitten by a chow. And know many people who've had similar problems with chows. As far as I'm concerned, that whole breed has problems.

What I do know about pit bulls is that there are many news stories about pit bulls biting the faces off of old women and children. Does that mean the breed is bad -- of course not. But it does mean that people who own pit bulls NOW are usually into them for their reps. Same with Rottweillers.

If you have a lab or hound, I give them the benefit of the doubt. (Though for killing cats, nothing is worse than a coonhound).

Maybe pit bull bites are just like spaniel or chihuahua bites. But the news has me convinced. I don't want to find out, sorry to say.

Pit bulls are the lions of the dog family. They are no more likely to bite you than most other breeds, but if you have to be attacked by a dog pray it's not a pit. They are more capable of killing you than most others. If a poodle is mean people laugh, if a pit is mean it needs to be destroyed.
There's plenty of breeds for different people, if you don't want a pit, fine. But irrational fear and mistrust of them threatens a whole breed of magnificent, powerful, loyal, playful animals simply because they are born skilled, capable, fearless fighters.
And Dex said he likes sheperds. Please don't tell me german shepherds don't attack people.
All dogs are predators and meat eaters by nature. Some have had most of it bred out of them over the years by breeding for looks not performance. But the more performance oriented dogs(hunting, fighting, guarding) are just as good if not better pets imho. just depends what you like and can handle responsibly.

Brsett you are way off and funny you mention boxer and lab the boxer i had was very very dog aggressive and wary of people he didn;t know not good when it came to friends coming over..Your lab is more likey to bite a human then a pittbull there is a natioanl behviour test done on all breeds and pitt/bully/staffs came in almost last as being the least aggressive towards humans or wanting to bite..

Agin all in how they are raised I have sene plenty of "good ol" fmaily dogs bite a kid b/c they are not use to them..Staffy bulls have an affinity towrds kids and babys..My staffy can be very hyper when adults are around loving and begging for attention like she never gets it..I take ger to my sisters where my 2 year old neice is and she is so calm no quxcik movements very quiet licks her hands and lays right next to her..Almost like you gave her a vailum so calm around kids..

bump^^^^

they are often misunderstood because they can literally rip another animal apart in record time and 2 minutes later lay on the couch with children and be very gentle. I could even grab my dogs food bowl or bone while they were eating it and they would just stand there and give me a sad face.
try that with your other breeds.
That being said you do have to be strong and prove without doubt that you are the lead dog when they test you. that is true of all strong breeds

This whole thing reminds me of a story and if i posted it already i apologize. I used to work next door to a john deere dealer and they had an old golden retriever that used to hang around the shop. Seemed harmless enough until one day a little 3 year old girl walked up and was just petting him and HE BIT HER FACE OFF. Needless to say her parents sued the place blind and put them out of business and the poor little girl has had countless reconstructive surgeries. Just goes to show that any dog can turn. Goldens are supposed to be the ideal family pet.

Amer, i think its good you went to a humane society. lots of animals out there without a good home...you'd be suprized with a little bit of looking you can find the breed you want and pay $50 bucks instead of a couple hundred or even thousand

Dog breeds are misunderstood just like supplements. One kid dies from abusing steroids and the media gets it and now its an illegal drug that kills everyone!!! im sure there has been just as many pitbull bites to lab bites but pits get that bad rep because they are more aggressive. Storm is aggressive but i dont see him ripping anyones throat out :)

This is exactly my point. Bad owner of a cocker spaniel. An annoying bite on the ankle. Bad owner of a pit bull, woman gets her face torn off. Sure the owner is the problem, but that doesn't make your face grow back. Maybe pit bulls should be licensed, I don't know the answer.

Where I grew up wolf-dog interbreeds were the redneck dog of choice. Are those okay in your opinion? What if I owned a tiger or an anaconda? I don't know where to draw the lines.

posted by brsett
I haven't looked it up, so if you have I believe you.

But I've got to think if there are more lab bites than pit bull bites, its just because there are about a zillion more labs then anything else. Labs are so laid back. Of course my brother had a basset hound that would bite if you touched its food, so its possible to a bad job with any dog (that's one of the first things to teach a dog imo, take its food away while its a puppy to let it know who's in charge).

I dont disagree with your line of reasoning at all. Its like giving a gun to an asshole.

posted by brsett
You know, it is kinda like steroids. They were scheduled because high school kids abused them. I'm kinda doing the same thing saying pit bulls should be banned because idiots may raise them. But, if you know what you're doing, I don't care if you own pit bulls. Shit you could keep tigers if you're doing it rt. Its just the idiots that concern me.

I guess the major difference in my mind is steroids screw up you, whereas dog attacks screw up someone else. But still, the idea is kindof the same. And then there's guns, heck I don't know.

Really, this would be a great planet if it weren't for the other people. :)

thats a good argument^^^^^

but everything is backwards. how many people die from steroids....??? so far Zero deaths are linked to steroids but how many deaths come from Alcohol?? drunk driving, overdose, but its still legal because the government makes money. same with cigs...thats why you can buy steroids from Youth clinics because they get it from a Pharm that is FDA approved.

what government offical can explain this? make alcohol illegal and steroids legal and it will be the same but in reverse! UG labs sellin moonshine

Andreas Munzer. Probably several hundred people have committed suicide after depression from coming off and not recovering their natural test.

But fools will screw up just about anything is my point. Including safe things like pets.

At any rate, Amer, good luck finding a cool dog! Post pics once you get it.

Whats wrong with a dog being half wolf? My dog is, and hes never been agressive to anyone ever. Just a little bigger than the average dog thats all. Any dog can kill you man. I've seen the nicest German Sheperds...yet some of the Cop Dogs I'm pretty sure could eat me in about half a second...my 2 cents

posted by estray
Actually, not to change the subject but as much gear as munzer was on, it wasnt the steroids that actually killed him. It was cytadren, which is a very potent cortisol blocker. The body needs a certain amount of cortisol to function properly and the reason his insides basically turned to liquid was that he had no cortisol in his system. A certain amount is needed by the body to retain cell function and structure.

posted by Storm
yep munzer died of things other then gear well gear as we know it..All of it is gear but oils steriod stuff like that is my point and why I keep talking so I can explain that he died from other stuff that isn't really considered gear or at least by those of us who compete and stuff like that understand good glad I made my point is this a run on sentance or amI just rambling?

I've owned pit bulls, I own several guns, and I sometimes do steroids. It is not the governments job to outlaw evrything that someone might abuse or misuse. The gvnment must simply punish those idiot who DO abuse things to other's harm.
If they outlaw guns and powerful dogs because they can be used to hurt people what else should be illegal? cars? baseball bats? knives?

People must take responsibility for their own actions and quit crying that society must be safe from human f*ck ups. as long as there are people there will be stupidity but the alternative sucks

so does that mean when you moleste your staffs, storm, that the puppies will be 1/2 staff,1/16th wolf, and 7/16 human? follow my math here...the 1/2 staff thing is easy...if only your left nut is 1/4 wolf and you have two nuts (im assuming) then your load would contain 1/8 wolf and 7/8 human. only half of your dna would be carried on to the puppies thus producing 1/16th wolf, 7/16 human and 1/2 staff...bet that would be one agressive ass dog. and smart enough to build shit and probably graduate most american high schools and some junior colleges!

Those 2 are actually crossbred on purpose?

well said. spot on. lines are drawn in wierd places. blaming objects or animals isnt the answer. at the end of the day. we are the intelegent ones with the power to manipulate these objects into being harmful, and also have the power to take harm away.

yes. i dont know any breeders personally. i would just google it!

real breeders don't regularly mix breeds unless they're doing it in a calculated way to try to create a new breed. that's the deal with the american bulldog. they were trying to make a bigger better pit bull. they are bigger and stronger but not even close to the gameness and fighting ability of the pit bull

mixing breeds doesn't necessarily mean you get the best of both breeds

posted by AMERFOOTBALL
you're right it doesn't mean you will get the best of both breeds. "real breeders"? i guess you mean ones that only breed "champ bloodline" dogs and are purebreds, right? plenty of those dogs have issues too. IMHO there is no reason to go with one of those dogs unless you plan on showing the dog or competing in events using your dog to pull or perform some other task. if you are just looking for a pet and a good dog, mixed dogs are fine and there are plenty of real breeders who breed good dogs for normal pets..

posted by SMBLSBGARMS
You're right amer, you don't need a purebred unless you just want one. I've had a pit/boxer mix and a pit/american bulldog mix. Both were very good dogs but the pure pit bulls were my favorite, just depends what you want in a dog.
So you know, we had to shoot the pit/amerbulldog mix because as he got older he got very hostile toward people even if it's owner was standing there. I've heard that is a common problem mixing pitbulls with other aggressive breeds, though that is my only 1st hand example.
If you just want a good looking, freindly dog you can probably just go to a pound. I grew up out in the country in the south so I never had trouble finding dogs, mixed or purebred.
The pit bull/boxer mix was a kickass dog! she was an accident when the breeder's champion fighting bitch got bred by their escaped champion brindle boxer stud. She was very friendly and crazy athletic but I don't think you could count on that every time those two are crossed. You may end up with a biter that jumps 6 ft in the air!
