I have heard that lifting weights is a good natural way to fight depression, anyone know if this has any truth to it?

Tucker, Larry A. "Weight Training Experience and Psychological Well-Being". Perceptual and Motor Skills. 1982. Vol.55 Pgs. 553-554.

113 University males were administered a test to assess self-concept, body satisfaction , extraversion, and neuroticism. They also reported the number of months they had trained with weights.

"Apparently, the more weight training reported by the subjects , the more self confident and satisfies they tended to be. Similarly, the males who indicated that they had trained relatively often with weights in the past showed the most positive attitudes toward their body parts and processes. They also tended to be significantly more sociable, impulsive, and outgoing that were the males who reported relatively few months of experience training with weights. Although the more experienced weight trainers displayed the more favorable psychological profiles, they "lied" or reported in a socially desirable fashion significantly less than the less experienced subjects."

"From the results, increased credence must be afforded the assertion that weight training can play a significant part in the mental health and well-being of males. This study suggests that as weight-training experience increases, global self concept , body cathexis, and extraversion tend to increase commensurately and lie-scale

Personally the shade of grey between the two to me seem to make sense based on the fact that the longer you do something the better you get and look. It is an investment that pays dividends like no other lifestyle. Setting monthly, yearly, daily goals and achieving them will also raise yourself esteem but if you got depression and have been diagnosed see a doctor. IF your not happy with the way you look lifting weights, eating healthy, and a positive attitude will totally raise your self esteem if looking better will make you feel better. If that's all you want then do it! Post your diet and routine! Current stats and be honest so we can see progress in like 6 months.

Thanks canni, that was intresting. I think a big part of the depression is the stress from college and other matters. I havent hit the gym hard in about over 4 months. Ill get some pictures and stats up by the end of the week and ill have a diet and routine set up that ill start on next week. I have too many tests this week to start working out now

Besides being happier, I'm allot more sexually motivated when I lift on a regular basis...no lie.

Not that I'm not a pervert in my native form, it's just that for some reason when I'm on a regular routine...lock up your daughters...lol.

Yeah, I know what you mean when you do something for long enough.. human psychology is amazing. My friend does a term of athlete psychology and these athletes who are doing a particular sport their entire lives cannot just stop when they retire... if they don't train in some form they go crazy.

Back to topic.. lots of people with stressful lives have ways of managing and dealing with stress, exercise is very common.

Its been proven that weights and exercise help to alleviate depresion from the dopemine and seratonin that is released as well as helping people have a better outlook on life. That was the reason why I first started lifting weights and found a difference a few weeks after. I also notice as others have reported that when stopping weights depression begins to kick in.

Its a pretty good medication to have.

Excercise in general is a great way to fight depression because it releases endorphins into your body that make you feel good! Smoking MJ is terrible for anxiety and depression unfortunatly..I dont know if you smoke im just guessing from the name lol..I gave up months ago because it was causing me problems and since ive stopped ive gotten much better! B Complex vitamins are also very good in helping with depression and anxiety! Meditation can really help also and the power of positive thinking!

Theres a book by that very same name - The power of positive thinking. voncent Pearl was a pioneer in the area. I found alot of his techniques and insight about positive thinking to be very interesting. Well worth a read if you like that kinda stuff and also Susan jeffers book called "Feel the fear and do it anyway" is another top book.

Yeah I bought it in 2004 and read up to about page 60. never really completed the whole lot even though it was pretty good reading. I have suggested it to some other people who tell me they loved it and that it helped them immensely.

I find that lifting weights makes me feel better about myself, maybe it's a control thing. Lifting weights seems to be the one thing I can control in my life completely, so it feels good. It also makes me feel like I have been productive.

Unfortunately beer and pizza have similar effects :ohcrap:

If I work out I dont necessarily feel "great" although I do smile (giggle) when I look at myself in the mirror straight after my shower...

BUT if I dont work out I feel like total crap...I start freaking out about everything so I guess Im gonna stick at it lol
