Hi..
Honestly, I'm a bit confused with this subject. There are many kinds of work out routines or schedules (whatever you call them). All that is to target the muscles.
Normally, beginners would do around 2/3 sets.
Advanced lifters would go to about 3/4.
But the amount of reps that you do makes a big difference. People say, for beginners - do 12/15/20 reps per set. What's the purpose of that?
To tone your body (to loose weight) you're supposed to to do more reps. Isn't that similar to what the begginer does?
It's a bit confusing sometimes. I meet some guys who need to put on & they're doing long sets as well..! And they're not beginners even.. .
As far as I know, if you need to become bigger you have to do less reps (Ex: 8-6), enabling you to use more weight.
Then what's with this theory about going on untill failure?
I thought you're supposed to lift your optimum weight, maybe use a partner for the last 2 or 3 reps.
Can someone clear this out & give a general principal for this..
(Hope I didn't confuse any of you by this.. LoL).

the higher the reps the more it "tones" the muscles

generally speaking most people grow with 4-8 rep range

anytihng under 4 is used more commonly used to increase stregth

I prefer worknig my muscles with higher reps to warm up then gradually increasing the weights till I can only do 4 reps
