Ever since i've started training, i've always used gloves since i have a natural tendency to have seaty palms while working out, and thus, havin poor grip. I always saw guys using wrist straps but never gave much thought to it. To my surprise, i bought my first set of wrist straps and HOLLY $HIT!! I can add at least 2 or 3 more reps to any set because of em....i feel like a dumbass for not tryin them earlier :banghead: I am now sitting at work typing this, and i can tell ya i wont be getting up from my chair for the next 8 hrs cause my back is stiff as hell.......i love that pain!

Whats your opinion on using chalk? how well does it work?
posted by shortz
Some people like chalk, but some gyms do not allow it. It seems to make a bit of a mess and then the pansies that go to use it next bitch. They have no idea how that chalk could help them. Ig they don't allow it, then use straps.

LOL I come from a family of power lifters and college football players. I would never dare wear gloves with them around and I have been taught that not wearing gloves does wonders for strength...and is anti gay. LOL

Personally, I don't use wrist straps/belts/gloves when working out. It takes all the attention off my forearms and turns a compound exercise into a focused exercise. I like my forearms to be really sore after my back day from doing deadlifts and rows 'au natural' for example. Sure you can do maybe 1 or 2 more shrugs but straps take all the pressure off my other body parts that are pretty crucial in lifting psssst like forarms!

At first, my hands hurt for weeks, but after a few years, the palms of my hands are like leather gloves. i could smack a bear's fur off. chalk isn't allowed for the gyms i go to either, but the best straps i've ever used are leather. i just keep tearing them up, though.

i honestly dont really pay attention to my gym's chalk rule....i use good quality straps and bags of chalk. Ive never used gloves, and will never do so.

Yeah w/out gloves your hands can get ALL that direct contact w/staph infections, bacteria, yeast & urine/fecal material up close & personal just the way you like it-Did anyone here see the nightline report that was on recently they did a study on gyms & how contaminated the equipment is in all gyms??? Some of the shit(yes they did find real human shit too) they found can't even be treated w/current antibiotics!!-I'll keep my gloves on thanks!

So, how do you take your gloves off when you are done lifting? :banghead: It's easy, don't put your hands in your mouth and wash your hands when you are done. Oh yeah, do you touch the hand rails in public places? How about the hand rails on escalators? Do you use public rest rooms? Yes? Well then, wash your hands as you leave the bathroom, only to touch the door that has traces of urine and feces on it as you leave, defeating the purpose of washing your hands. Media bullshit once again...shit and piss are everywhere you go in public.

I don't understand why you don't use straps, what I do is use the heaviest weight I can without straps and then when there's nothing left in my grip put the straps on and lift more weight. When you guys say 1-2 more reps, are you joking, when I use straps I increase the weight alot and keep up the reps. So I get the best of both worlds and my strength & gains increase faster. This includes my forearm strength. Example; Increase as follows when shrugging Without straps 160-180 With straps 220-250 QUOTE; Sure you can do maybe 1 or 2 more shrugs but straps take all the pressure off my other body parts that are pretty crucial in lifting psssst like [I]forarms[/I Answer; may be you are not using straps properly, before you go off on one, on me saying that. There are lots of people out there that use straps wrongly for years and some, never find out :banghead: . Example I was in the gym this monday and saw a guy using straps for deadlifts who had been going to the gym for about 6years and said to him to try a slightly different way of wrapping around bar so that it's more comfortable. You may already know this but I'm guessing not because you say when you use straps it hit's differently. Don't put the straps around wrist and pull, this just puts emphasis onto the wrist. This is going to be hard to explain. You will have to make sure your straps are long enough for this. When the the straight part of the strap is put through the loop most people pull it to wrist, this is where they go wrong. When you put your straps on, leave the section where they cross in the palm of your hand not tight to wrist. This section where they cross( the V shape) in the palm of your hand wraps under the bar and then just wrap the straight section around as usual without pulling the strap back to the wrist. The V section has to stay in the palm of your hand under the bar. Oh, another thing if you know someone who will make you straps out of good quality leather hide, have them do it because I found them the best straps you can get. Hope you understand this and if you do give it a try. It takes stress of the wrist so you lift more and hits where it's suppose to.

Well to be honest with all of you i used to use gloves only when i was benching like 340 because it always ended up busting blood vessels in my hands because i have little wimpy hands. but other then that i dont use belts/straps/gloves for anything and since im a giant pussy now and i dont PwrLift anymore i dont have to worry bout big weight because im doing 15reps with every set with light weight.

Nathan, I like your posts and don't want to end up like Storm and Skinny, but aren't you only 19yrs old??? I don't understand why you are talking about how you used to powerlift and why you would be shorting yourself by just doing high rep, low weight. Glove are for pussies! Calouses (sp) are cool!

Thx for the comment, but when i say i used to PWr Lift i mean back from 9th-12th grade year i pwrlifted and i competed (never took less then 1st btw). I stoped to try to get cut up and started bb at the begining of my sernior year. I recentley stopped doing that and started doing a Marine Training Program so right now im doing a mixture of high cardio and BB. and what i mean by im a Giant pussy now is because i dont see any gains because of how often im switching it up im sure when i keep a steady thing going ill make mad gains.

That's right, I forgot about the corps. I wouldn't put too much strain on the Marine training program. you will do three months in bootcamp which will put you into the type of shape you will need to be in. Keep in mind, 90% of everyone that goes into the corps has never done anything harder than high school football practice and the majority of them make it through basic. To be honest bro, I thought basic training was a f'in joke. You will see what I mean. as far as making recon, it has very little to do with physical capability.
