Hey all, A couple of years ago I pulled a muscle in my lower back. I used to work out all the time, but as I have gotten older I have strayed away from working out. I was never much for stretching which I know damn good and well that this is a VERY important part of excesize.....I guess I was just too stubburn. The muscle that I have injured is in the lower right of my back. It is about 1 or 2 inches to the right of my spine, pretty much right on the waste line. Now it seems as though it takes very little to pull it again. My question is, has anyone else with this same injury been able to overcome it and how? I would like to be able to lift things without worrying too much about pulling this muscle again. I know that most likely I am going to have to start stetching, but I would like to know if there is any specific excersize that will target this area and help relieve it. Thanks.

I had back pain a long time ago (when I first started weight lifting). Every morning when I woke up my lower back hurt. So I started doing crunches and within a month my back problem went away. Strengthen your Abs and stretch, remember don't bounce when stretching and try to hold your stretched position for at least 30 seconds before letting up. You have scar tissue so you might wanna see a Massage Therapist to work on it as well. I hope this helps.

Actually, warming up prevents more injueries than stretching does. Yes, I have had numerous pulls. I have had the last one since this month last year. It is finally feeling good enough to go heavy with squats again....too bad, now my knee is killing me. Before that, I had a ruptured L5 and had sugery. It was accompanied by a really bad muscle pull. Took quite a while to recover, but it doesn't effect me at all now. That was 7 years ago.

warm up before going big and that will help more than most things but also the massage wouldnt hurt. most likely feel so good youll keep doing it lol. specially if your therapist is hot. but take it easy if it starts to hurt again. a friend of mine droped weight on his chest cause his back let go and he didnt have a spoter. so dont take it easy to start out with

do light weights for lower back strengthening excersises. a guy i trained, he had back problems, and he started off with really light deadlifts (10-15 rep range) as well as ab work once a week. Once he got comfortable and could deadlift his own weight, i got him onto hypers as well...now he works for a moving company :D

i had this same problem, except it happened because of growth spurts. Physical therapy worked wonders for me.

Strengthen your abs and it will solve alot of your problems I have pull muscle in my lower back and upper back. Warming up is really important. I have read in the New England Medical Journal that there is no proof that stretching before working out prevents injury but stretching after does. I find that hard to believe myself, but I do know stretching after 100% sure helps me out a ton so I don't get sore. I still would suggest stretching before and after with a solid warm-up first even if a medical journal says it doesn't help stretching before.
