I went to the dr. the other day for a physical and the doc pulls out this bmi wheel and starts to tell me how I am 40lbs overweight and I need to loose that. I am 6'4 260lbs and have been lifting for 4 years. the last time I had my bodyfat checked by someone who knew what they were doing( used calipers) I was at about 12% bf which I know is still high but that was 3 years ago and I know I have put on more muscle and weight since then. has anyone ever had an experience with a dr like this? :screwy:

Sorry to say he's right technically. There are studies of rats and humans that are very conclusive showing that large, healthy, muscular people have a shorter life span. It's more taxing on the heart.

Umm....ok...

Just telling you the truth. No offense to WGYM4EVER but it's true. Read up on some research articles if you don't believe me. Your "Um... Okay" makes me think you are questioning that.

I am not really questioning the healthy aspect and lifestyle. I just have a hard time believing that to say for example a man competes at 290lbs. @ 6'0" with a body fat percentage of about 6% is overweight. This is not to say that he won't die when he is 60 but to say he is overweight is proposterous. :confused:

Oh I see. Well not to disagree too much but when you are that size whether you be fat or solid muscle you have some of the same health risk. Your body has to work harder because of how much mass you have. Look at some of the bodybuilders seen some shows with Jay Cutler where he gets winded just walking around. I believe you are considered "obeses" if you have a BMI over 25 or right around there. I'm sure alot of us fit in there on these boards.

Just so you know I just went to the doctor last week also and he told me to lose some weight and I'm 225lbs 6'1" just guessing now but last time I check my BF was 13.7% with electric impedence test pretty close to the same now. I have been thinking about it and I can't talk myself into losing weight that is muscle (didn't really think much about it), but I would definetly rather be big and muscular then big and fat.

BMI should not be used on people who are weight lifters. They were designed for the average person. What jc said is correct though. Having alot of muscle causes your body to use more energy in evertyhing you do, this causes more stres on the heart.

Bad thing is, BMI is documented and if you change health insurance, they could end up using that number and either turning you down or making your rates very high.

My doctor and I talked about that the other day. He said that that is what they are taught to use, but in a case like me he can obviously tell that that number would be skued. He said that everything else checks out fine so there was nothing to worry about. He stated as long as vitals are good most people shouldn't worry.

I hate doctors dude they tell you all sorts of nonesense. That said, some things obviously, they now about, but not all.

This is some of my experiences with them;
Doctors says jogging is good but weights are not, what a joke that is, jogging causes joint problems(ankles, knees, hips) and people die jogging because it lifts your blood pressure too high.

Weights, oh let me think, just a few, strengthens ligaments and tendons, gives you a stronger bone structure more than any other sport on the planet. You become more supple, you start to learn more about your body and nutrition. You heal from broken bones more effectively. Confidence increases, sense of well being increases.

Had a motor bike accident years ago was told wrist fracture was bad, had to have physio. All the stuff they told me to do was useless. so I tried what I'd learn't from weight training and low and behold the physio could not believe the progress I'd made and I no longer needed them.

If you need help from a doctor go to a specialist sports injury doc because they know what there talking about. You're average doctor hasn't a clue when injuries in sport happen. What do they say "Just rest and take some anti-inflammatories and don't train for six months :screwy: . In fact I think you should stop training all together. :fu: Just sit down and become a lard ass like the majority of society". :banghead:

You know what really pee's me off is if you go to a doctor because of your injury, they don't seem to give you the time of day, the same if you have have a bike accident. But if I'm a alcoholic, drug addict, smoker or some fat Lard a** that has abused his body his all life and has heart or lung problems or what ever they can't do enough for them, damn, something has to be wrong with that.

Doctors are just bias against anyone that weight trains. So what if I'm bigger and don't live so long, most people that live too long don't have a very good quality of life any way. Most are dribbling, incontinent, get disrespected all the time and are stuck in a care home or left to die at their own home. And the only thing keeping them going is the drugs. Cool if I go before that s***.

Sorry for the rant but as you can tell lots of bad experiences with doc's

This is just as rediculous as saying weight lifting is bad for you, so, you are being just as hipacritical as the phtsician is.
