When doin bench press ive always been wondering this, do you touch your chest with the bar or just go to 90 degrees?

You touch your chest. In a powerlifting competition you have to touch your chest and in some cases hold it for a second before you do the concentric part of the lift.

aye i use to powerlift and i went to a lot of competitions. Many of the meets we had a lift off then we would take it to our chest touch and hold it till they said "UP". others i went to were touch and go comps and mainly its just that you unrack it take it to your chest touch and go back up. ive had a lot of friends tell me that if you go slightly above your chest it takes more muscle to stop the weight but i trully think its just adding more strain to their chest, IMO touch your chest every rep even if you know its not going back up, just make sure you take that weight down slowly and control it. It takes a lot more muscle to control weight and use good form then it does to just throw the weight around. and if you bounce the weight you are putting yourself at a big risk you can crack or bruise your ribs very easily if your trying to bounce 300lbs when you weight about 185 like me.

I used to love the Bench-press, and IMO the answer to the question really depends on your goals. If streangth is your primary goal, stick with a wide grip and come all the way down, take a breath, and go all the way back up. Before I turned 20 I was pushing over 500lbs I mainly attributed this to the fact that I worked with HEAVY dumbbells, Machines, and the flat straight bar press. Keeping it well rounded and training each and every muscle (including your shoulders!) will give you the fullest/strongest chest.

yeh i agree with that 100% if you dont work the rest of your body you'll never get anywhere. Shoulders and Tri's are your benchpresses best friends
