It depends on your goals and training methods. When going lighter, take shorter rest periods, when going heavy, take longer rest periods. There are all kinds of ways to train and your routine is and condition will determine what your rest time should be.

do you lift heavy with low reps, or lighter with higher reps?

Here is an example...my last routine I was using a cumulative fatigue type of training method. That calls for 45 second rest periods at the beginning, then I go to 2 min rest periods. My current routine I am taking 3 minutes rest because I am using HIT methods.

I agree it really depends I just listen to my body.... if I do a warm up set and feel fine after 30 seconds I'll do another set right away... if I've just gone to almost failure and it';s been a minute I'll rest another minute till I feel I cna lift again... but rarely will I rest longer than 2 minutes unless I'm going for a new personal best or something
