I have been wondering if visiting the Sauna is an adequate Cardiovascular workout. When I go to the sauna(Dry sauna) for 10-15 minutes at very (I mean VERY) high heat my heart is beating like mad and my veins are bulging underneath my skin. I do also run, and swim every day with a combination of weights and proper eating. I was wondering if any of you know the cardiovascular benefits to visiting the sauna. I don't know if any of you watched the UFC training thing on Spike T.V, but I noticed that they visit the sauna all the time, but never understood WHY they do it. And I just want to say the information provided on this forum is outstanding, and have been a great help to me. It is both uplifting and motivating to be able to follow along and see the progress some of the vets on this forum, and even the beginners like me. Your input is MUCH apreciated.

I don't know the cardiovascular benefits of a sauna, but the reason ufc fighters enter a sauna all the time is to cut weight. When a fighter finds hes gettin on in weight alittle bit, they have to do something to stay within there weight class. So typically before a weigh-in (which comes before the match) fighters will enter a sauna and either sit or workout in there wearing sweat suits in order to sweat out large amounts of water. Losing the water cuts pounds off there weight and after the weigh in they typically start drinkin water like madmen to gain the weight back for the fight. that was one really long explanation to describe something so simple...o well.

Other benefits is that it raises your metabolism, gets rid of toxins and waste elimination and also claim that reduces stress and anxiety.

I didnt know it raised metabolism, I thought cold raised your metabolism through shivering.

I've never heard of shaking rasing your metabolism - you lose fat through being cold as your body uses the fat on your body in a attempt to keep you warm not thrugh the shaking.

Shivering is rapid involuntary muscle contractions to influence more blood flow which raises metabolic rate to produce heat. Just thought if you were in sauna your body is sweating to cool you down which is quite the opposite. I'll have to read up on it.
