Hi, im new to these forums but not to working out, i would consider my self intermediate. I was just wondering what is the optimal amount of sets to do per muscle group if your looking to put on size? Im just wondering what it takes because i don't know if i am doing to much for instance in my chest workout i normally do 20+ sets for my chest. Is that to much?

20+ sets is way over training. After my warm up I usually only do 3-4 exercises as much weight I can and still get 8-10 reps, 3 sets. I use this type of routine for all muscle groups. hope this helps.

Depends on how many reps per set you are doing. Don't exceed 30 reps per each workout for hypertrophy. Loose rule but it works for most. The main variable in this would be if you are predominantly slow twitch muscle fiber, then you are going to have a long hard road ahead of you trying to get more fast twitch (Large) muscle fibers from doing more power movements, 2-5 reps.

Good way to find out if you are more fast or slow twitch is to take 80% of your max on any lift and see how many times you can rep it out. If you can hit 6-8 reps you are average, more than 10 you have sh*t genetics and 5 or less, you belong in bb'ing.
