Is it true that you don't need to exercise a muscle more than once a week? If so, is that because it needs that much time to grow in between exercises?

Yes, that's true unless you're advanced. Work each muscle hard once a week, then eat well and rest so they can recover and grow. You don't grow in the gym, you grow while you're dreaming of naked women.

Depends who you ask. Bodybuilders typically train a bodypart once per week. Powerlifters, will train the same part 3 or more times per week. a good friend of mine is a PL and he squats 3 times a week right now. he squats a fckin house too. ive trained 5x5 before where i squatted, benched, and DL 3 times a week and had good results building strength. in fact, im thinking of going back to that for a while...

i went back to that 3 weeks ago. I go back and forth on this one. I'll train one body part/week until i feel like i'm in a rut and then i'll switch and go to a couple times a week. gotten good results from it.It's all about what works best for you...

I hit calves twice a week, but that's because I'm killing myself to bring up my chicken legs. Everything else gets once a week. Plus I think calves are tougher than other muscles.

I look at it this way There are 5 major bodyparts, 7 days in the week, you need two days off. That's what works for me.
