I don't mean guys who trained in the past and no longer train, but guys who are trainers and never trained in their life. IMO, I think that is very important. It helps you to understand what feels better, not just because someone tells you it does, gives you first hand experience on how tough it is to make gains, or losses. The reason I bring this up is because I had talked to a friend's GF about getting her on track with a routine. I talked to her today and found out she went to this trainer for help. Most of the trainers at my gym are good guys, but it's this one guy that I don't care for. I saw her training today and she was doing about 10 reps, but pausing for about 5 seconds in between reps. She was moving through the cycle very slow and taking very long breaks. Granted, she has been working out on her own for a month, she is now familiar with alot of the equipment. I asked her why she was taking breaks in between reps and she replied "the trainer told me to do that so I don't compensate with other muscles and use bad form". What do you guys think of this statement? My first reaction was, if you're using other muscles to assist a lift, you are going too heavy and need to simply back the weight down. I think the biggest kicker about this guy was the people he trained. Three women that stepped on stage looking like they were 12 weeks out from a show. They were destroyed by the competition too. The other women were pretty dialed in and these girls simply looked like regular models would. No real definition or anything.

That's the problem with some gyms today, the owners don't give a **** who they hire. They hire these tom, dick and harry know it alls, some of them aren't even certified and these guys with zero knowledge for real world weighlifting often give out bad advice to newbies and the sad fact is that these newbies believe that they are getting great advice but overall they're not and they wonder why they aren't progressing as they should be.

This topic has come up on each and every board I have ever been on... It seems that the criteria today for trainers is that you have a kinesiology degree of a physio degree or nutrition and health from some community college. Who cares what you look like. Oh, there is also the ass mould test for the females too, sit in the mould (of a nice shapely ass), if your ass fits - you get the job!! Best school for training? The school of hard knocks (as my father would say), learn by doing!! I've been at the gym and had people come up to me and ask questions when there was a personal trainer right beside me. Now I am not in the best shape in the world but better then the trainers in my gym.... what's that tell ya.
