Im a 19 year old whose about 5'10" and 170 lbs. Im not exactly skinny but im not fat. The only place fat seems to collect on my body is my mid section, especially love handles. I have just started working out (its been about a week as of 3-4-04) and im just wondering if i lift for an hour and do cardio for 20-30 minutes 5-6 times a week how long should it take before i start seeing a difference? Im watching what i eat a lot more and dont come close to 100% of my DV in fat or saturated fat, and before i started working out i was going above my 100% DV. Im the type of person who needs hope in order to keep motivated, so im just wondering when i should start seeing results so i can keep working til then and know that im working for something. Another question is how man calories do you burn if you lift weights for an hour on top of the 250 calories i burn running on an eliptical? And do i need to keep my daily calories below what im burning at the gym in order to lose that fat and the lvoe handles? Thank you very much and i appreciate you taking the time to respond.

67% of losing weight and gaining muscle is diet, 26% of it is lifting and 21% of it is resting. I was never good at math.

Getting "ripped", "cut" or whatever else you wanna call it is more about diet than anything. Cardio helps with burning the cals, but if you feed yourself the right foods, you won't need to burn as many cals. First, you need protien. Go for 1g per pound of body weight. So, you would need about 170g, or get as close as you can. The more you diet, the easier you will find it to get the right foods and enough protien. Eat healthy carbs...cut out sugar...that one is the worst. Limit yourself on carbs by not eating any past 5 PM. (assuming you have a normal schedule) or 4-5 hours before you go to bed.

You can do cardio after you train, but make sure your training isn't taking you longer than 45 minutes, give or take a few minutes. Also, 5-6 days a week is very excessive for lifting. Try for every other day, or a typical Mon, Wed, Fri routine. You still need to rest or you will be burned fast and you will be over training and lose motivation.

Sugar is your nr. 1 enemy! Eliminate it as much as possible from your diet. Be sure to incorporate the basics into your workout routine: squats, deadlifts, presses and rows. Proper eating and proper lifting should show some positive results in 2-3 months. Keep the faith brutha and believe that you will get there.
