How much does smoking affect results of working out? Should I just go ahead and quit?

posted by cosmic-dust
I dont think it will affect results of working out. Only your cardio respiratory system.

Smoking deprives your your muscles of oxygen so I would say its bad for you but I smoked for 8 years and was about 170lbs, not very big. I'd say quit but if you are having problems them smoke just don't wait 20 years to quit.

As well as the above smoking deproves your muscles ability to carry vitamins - another important part of the game. Recovery will not be as good when you are smoking + smokng is not good for growing bodies - supresses your growth so yes I think that smoking should be avoided.

And if you think that you can't quit then thats a load of ballony as many have quit in the past without assistance and if the doctor was to tell you today that you have 2 months to live smoking or a couple of years without the smoke then yeah you would quit without a 2nd thought no problem.

also i would think smoking would make it tougher to put on wait.....if im not mistaken i think it supresses your appetite 2

Yeah it does suppress the appetite thats why some females who are obviously lacking in the brain department smoke - so they don;t have to eat as much. Theirs some bright females out there.

I smoked a pack and a half of marlboro reds a day for 11 years. I quit about 7 or so months ago. One of the best things I've ever done. It will definately affect all kinds of aspects of your lifting. Constricts and hardens arteries thus affecting circulation. How do you think all the nutrients we take in make it to your muscles? It decreases your energy, respiration..etc. Go to http://www.whyquit.com , take a look through that site for a while, you'll never want to smoke again. There are THOUSANDS of individual chemicals in each cigarette. We don't even really know how they all affect us. Smoking is very very very bad in so many ways.

If you do decide to quit, sign up for a free account at http://www.quitnet.com . It tracks all your quitting smoking related information. For instance, for me, today, ...

220 days, 1 hour, 21 minutes and 51 seconds smoke free.

6602 cigarettes not smoked.
$1,320.00 and 1 month, 20 days, 10 hours of your life saved.

Your quit date: 5/17/2006 12:00:00 PM

The money part is what really gets me...this means I was spending a little under $3000 a year just to kill myself. Quitting is like giving yourself a little raise
