| Just wondering how intense a workout should be (i've been working out for a couple of months). Using a bicep curl for example, how much burn should I feel on the last rep--should it feel really intense, or if it feels really intense am I overdoing it (assuming I'm using proper lifting form the whole time)? Also, if I'm doing bicep curls and I fatigue at, say, 3 sets of 8 reps, should the I expect to be able to do 3 sets of 9 reps the next time I work out, or 3 sets of 10 reps etc. Any advice here would be appreciated. |

| When people don't have the intensity, they make up for it with volume. When you reach the level of intensity you should be at, you can make great gains with low volume. At one point I was at 6 sets for chest and back and made great gains simply because they were really intense. Your last rep should be complete failure with GOOD FORM. So, when doing a bicep curl, your last rep should be very hard to complete, but you shouldn't have to throw the weight up either just to make it...in other words, don't swing the weight to build monum so you can complete. Sometimes I slightly arch my back because I am determines to get that last rep...but it's bad form. Make sure you are slow on the negative...let the weight down slow, then push/pull hard. |

| Can someone take the SH*T out of this thread???? It had the start of a very informative post until some DIPSH*T FU*KE* IT UP!!! As for intensity, it really depends on the person. I find that I have to train each body part differently to have intense sessions in the gym. For instance, my most intense bicep days come from volume training. I may do 12 - 15 sets for biceps. All slow and controled with negatives thrown in for fun. At the end of the workout I can't even scratch my nose and my arms feel like they will explode... it's great!! For chest I do a max of 9 sets with one warm up. Two incline presses and one flye (flat, incline, or pec dec) and thats it. BUT, I have the same feeling in my pecs when I am done as the feeling in my biceps. And no, just because you did 3 sets of 8 this time it doesnt mean that you should be able to do 3 sets for 9 next time. You may be able to to 1 set of 9 followed by two sets for 8 but one of the biggest misconceptions in this game is that it is an overnight sport... IT IS NOT! If it was, and it was easy, then we would all look like freaking GODS! Watch your gym on January 2nd, count the people. Then take another count on Feb 2nd... Pardon me while I put away my soapbox... yeesh... LMAO! |
