Was just curious if it should be treated similar to the workout meals, in other words slow digesting food before (oats) and fast digesting afterwards (protein shake). If not what would be good?

Generally, much people do cardio with the empty stomach in order to maximize fat buring. Indeed, doing cardio with the empty stomach maximizes fat burning but may lead in losing muscles as well. While doing cardio, body uses approximately 70% of fats and 30% of carbs (glycogen). Actuallly, it depends on intensity of cardio. If your reserves of glycogen are empty, body will use fat storage but protein of muscle too givent that it can not get carbs. Some people take BCAA before cardio. So body use these BCAA and not muscular protein. I think it's a good alternative if you want to maximize fat burning and save muscles. In all cases, you should not cause an insulin release before training. Before cardio, a snack made up of protein is fine. After, it depends. If it's time of your meal, have your meal.

I should not eat carbs before then? Would complex carbs like oats cause a insulin spike. I normally eat 1/2 cup of oats with 1 spoon of whey protein which is like 12.5g of protein.

If you wanna maximize fat burning, it's better if you do not get carbs in your system. If you get carbs in the system, body will use these carbs at first and less fats. However, if you do not have carbs in your system, body will use at first fatty acids. All carbs cause an insulin spike. It's more or less high according carbs. For instance, Oats release less insulin than wheat but it still release insulin. Therefore, if you want to maximize fat burning, don't have carbs before cardio. Have BCAA or protein snack instead. However, you've got to get complex carbs with protein before lifting. Keep in mind body uses principaly fat and then carbs for cardio whereas it uses principaly carbs for lifting.
